As a drummer, Kirby has played extensively, both live and in the studio, in big bands, small combos (covering many musical styles including jazz, fusion, rock, Latin jazz, World music) and cover bands. While living in South Florida, Kirby was a long-time member of the Miami Beach Symphony Orchestra and the Carmen Nappo Youth Symphony. He has performed with such notable musicians as Ira Sullivan, Gary Campbell, Dave Liebman, Dave Samuels, Rafael Cruz and Jerry Jemmot. Kirby currently leads his Blue Brush Jazz Trio, which performs in the New York/New Jersey metro area. As a composer, Kirby has a host of literature published. His snare drum solo book entitled Stick Twisters: A Dirty Dozen ‘n One Solos for Snare Drum is available through Black River Music Plus-Drums and Amazon. Both of these publications received favorable reviews in the January 2013 issue of Percussive Notes Journal, a publication of the Percussive Arts Society. He has three pieces for percussion ensemble – Stick Steady, Co-opercussion and Pots, Pans & Coffee Cans – that are available through Rhythmic Expressions Percussion. These works have been exhibited at the Virginia Music Educators Convention and the Pennsylvania Music Educators Conference. Stick Steady has been performed at the Florida Bandmaster’s Association Competition. Kirby also composes and arranges a variety of music for concert band, violin trio and his jazz trio.
