These cards provide practice for your students with decoding words. Each list contains words with similar decoding patterns. Some of the cards contain different colored letters to provide your students that extra support they need when learning how to decode.

Working with Title I students I have found teaching onset and rime can be a challenge. They are just grasping their sounds and are now being asked to apply and put them together. This activity gives them a little extra help. We start with a picture containing the onset and rime that they put together on their own. They learn the task using these pictures before moving on to just letters.

In order for students to be proficient at reading words with long vowel sounds they need a variety of opportunities to work with these words. This activity provides a fun way to practice long vowel sounds in context. Long vowel sounds included in this activity are CVe, oa, ai and ea.
To Play: Lay out all the treasure chests on a work surface. Provide students with the treasure maps and sentences for them to read. They are to decode and select the appropriate word to complete each sentence.
