This unit explores features of nonfiction texts and creates a nonfiction conventions book for students to identify and explain the various features.

This assessment is scaffold to include telling time to the hour, half hour, quarter hour, five minute interval, minute, and elapsed time. It also includes a chart to analyze class results. You can tally results for each question to see overall class performance. Results can be used to make differentiated groups for more guided instruction.

This is a great beginning of the year unit, but can be used any time, to establish the importance of setting goals. This helps students self-monitor to when they need help and how to choose independent activities. It was designed with then intent of using with math centers, but is easily adaptable to other areas where students will independently choose activities or centers.
