This activity is designed for students to practice interpreting unit rates and solving proportions in a nutritional context. The activity works as a nice cross-curricular lesson with health or physical education, where teachers could focus on macronutrients and general nutrition.
This activity investigates life expectancy by birth year. Students are instructed to plot points on a scatter plot, draw a line of best fit, calculate an equation for their line, and use the line to make predictions.
This activity was designed for middle school students as review or introduction to graphing coordinate points. If they follow the instructions carefully, the points they mark will create the outline of the state of West Virginia. The activity also includes some additional questions about geography, so the activity could have a cross curricular bend. This is particularly useful in an 8th grade classroom, when students are taking West Virginia Studies alongside pregeometry/algebra.
