Multiple meaning words are a source of confusion for many students, especially English Language Learners. This graphic organizer asks students to locate predetermined polysemous words in a text and select the correct definition based on the context of the story. Teacher preparation includes selecting multiple meaning words in a text and recording two possible definitions for each word.
Isabel Beck, Margaret McKeown, and Linda Kucan suggest that teachers select 3-4 tier two vocabulary words in read aloud books to discuss with students. In their book, Bringing Words to Life: Robust Vocabulary Instruction, they suggest that teachers prepare questions to guide the oral discussion of vocabulary to help students build deeper understanding of words. This sheet provides three words and sample questions that could be used with the book, Testing Miss Malarkey by Kevin O'Malley.
Students will work in their groups to find the possible combinations of bicycles and tricycles at the bike rally. This performance task provides students with cooperative group experience that includes independent reflection or questioning as follow-up. The task consists of a teacher direction sheet with sample performance criteria or exemplary responses and student activity sheets.
