This a strategy to use when breaking words into syllables. Three simple steps and it works all the time.

Multiple meaning words are a source of confusion for many students, especially English Language Learners. This graphic organizer asks students to locate predetermined polysemous words in a text and select the correct definition based on the context of the story. Teacher preparation includes selecting multiple meaning words in a text and recording two possible definitions for each word.

Isabel Beck, Margaret McKeown, and Linda Kucan suggest that teachers select 3-4 tier two vocabulary words in read aloud books to discuss with students. In their book, Bringing Words to Life: Robust Vocabulary Instruction, they suggest that teachers prepare questions to guide the oral discussion of vocabulary to help students build deeper understanding of words.
