To complete a novel study of the popular Louis Sachar novel "Holes," students will create either a diorama of Camp Green Lake, a book review (or movie review if the students have seen the film), or create a wanted poster for one of the characters. This project was originally designed for grade seven students and takes approximately three classes to complete. Scoring guides are included.

In the introduction of this assignment is a brief history of Japan and the tradition of haiku. This project was developed to also support the Alberta grade 8 social studies Japan unit. The assignment comes with several examples of haiku and two rubrics: a "daimyo" rubric for advancing or grade-level students and a "samurai" rubric for your emerging writers.
