For thirty years, I worked as an early childhood teacher, a first grade teacher and then as a Title I remedial reading/writing teacher. I taught reading, writing, phonics, reading strategies, poetry, writing essays, spelling strategies, Greek and Latin root strategies and of course, test prep. With creative insights, I brought restaurant menus, comic books and song lyrics into my classroom. I offered magnifying glasses to students who "broke their glasses." I did whatever got them interested in literacy.

UDL Arthur's Thanksgiving
This UDL lesson is for a second grade level of G & T, ELL, LD, ED and grade level students. Modifications for hearing and visually impaired students are offered. This is a sequencing strategy with a look at a problem/solution. If Arthur directs a school play instead of a teacher, what could possibly go wrong? The assessments involve writing with some loose leaf, some Smart Write and some drawing paper for sketching. Glue sticks are easy for kids but glue bottles are another option.

UDL Plan for "The Last Lesson" by Alphonse Daudet
This 3-day lesson plan is for struggling students in Middle School or High School. The text is a short story about a community facing a struggle with censorship and foreign oppression. It discusses regret, patriotism, censorship and a major life event. Figurative language and linguistic chauvinism are woven into a brief history event that students may not have any knowledge of. The cause for Manhattan's Central Park and its effect on Manhattanites
Students begin by comparing their homes to the homes photographed by Jacob Riis, in 1800's tenements. This will create a need for an improvement, or a cause. By viewing the cramped conditions, the residents obviously need an oasis or green space. To enable that to happen, other residents in shanty towns must give up their modest lodgings. Finally, students weigh whether the improvement is morally justified. Multiple images, drawings, maps and graphic organizers are provided.

Character Trait Lesson Rubrics with Examples of Behavioral Traits
Enclosed are three short paragraph fill-in the blank rubrics, multiple facial caricatures and 32 lines of synonyms and antonyms of behavioral traits, in an effort to get away from the typical "happy/sad" vibe. Sci-fi narrative for 6th grade
Enclosed is a plan to use for struggling writers. It has a springboard and a scaffold to help the student get started. It also has a vocabulary list, for a fail-proof way to write a descent story, with several detailed sentences, in a timely fashion. Teaching style
Piaget was always my North Star. The child's best interests were always placed first, despite what the supervisor said. I always thought outside of the box.
Awards & shining teacher moments
Over the years, I accrued many love letters that I keep posted throughout my home. The skills I learned served my sons well, as I now have two college grads. One of my sons is now going for his own teacher certification. I"m a proud mother.
My own education history
My first degree was in Communications with a Political Science minor from St. John's University. My first and second Master's degrees were in Elementary Education and Reading as a Specialty from Brooklyn College. My third Master's was in Special Education from the College of St. Rose, which recently closed unfortunately. The professors were incredible.
