Teaching style

My teaching style is all about active, joyful learning. I believe in making education an adventure where curiosity is celebrated and mistakes are seen as opportunities to grow. My resources are designed to get kids moving, talking, and thinking critically. I love seeing that "aha!" moment on a student's face, and my goal is to create hands-on activities that empower them to discover concepts for themselves and build a love of learning that lasts a lifetime.

Awards & shining teacher moments

After 25 years in the classroom, some of my most rewarding moments involve connecting with other educators. It's been a true honor to be a featured guest on several educational podcasts, which has allowed me to share my passion for creating rich learning experiences. A real highlight has been running Maths N Movement workshops, taking my passion for active learning on the road and working with teachers in schools from Adelaide to Darwin, and even in overseas cities like NYC. I also founded Learn From Play, a hub that gives me an additional outlet to share my knowledge and resources with a wider community. When I'm not in the classroom, I'm usually traveling around the country visiting schools and libraries or speaking at conferences, connecting with fellow educators and sharing the joy of creative learning.

My own education history

My educational journey has provided me with a robust foundation for my career. I hold a Bachelor of Teaching and a Bachelor of Education (Honours), which gave me a strong start in classroom practice and pedagogical theory. My desire to support every student led me to pursue a Master of Education in Special Education, equipping me with the skills to differentiate instruction and cater to a diverse range of learning needs. Furthering my passion for literature and resource management, I completed a Master of Education in Teacher Librarianship, a qualification that has enriched my understanding of literacy development and my ability to create a thriving learning community. This unique combination of degrees allows me to bring a well-rounded, research-backed, and inclusive approach to my teaching and resource creation.

Additional biographical information

I've always been passionate about creating engaging and effective learning experiences, which led me to develop two unique teaching programs: Bloomsmath: This program applies Benjamin Bloom's hierarchical taxonomy to mathematics, encouraging students to move beyond basic recall to higher-order thinking skills like analysis and creation. Maths N Movement: This dynamic program combines fundamental movement skills with active games to make math lessons fun, hands-on, and a student favourite. As a teacher librarian in a large school with over 1000 students, I'm in my dream job, surrounded by the latest books and a community of eager readers. A published author. My first book, 'Frugal Fred', is now joined by a new collaboration with my husband, Patrick. Together, we're creating 'Playful Parables', a series of dynamic read-along stories. These richly illustrated, animated audiobooks allow children to follow along with story as the active word changes color during playback. These new stories are exclusively available on my website Learn From Play and they are the perfect tool for sparking discussions on essential life skills like friendship, being a good person, personal hygiene, and much more.
