Start your year with this creative writing activity which uses the sights and sounds of nature to inspire poetry and narrative writing. Students will write what they hear, see, feel and wonder about the field trip and then use it to compose a poem and a story. The poems and/or stories can then be turned into a digital story if you want to take it a step further. This packet guides students in writing a narrative story about St. Patrick’s Day. It includes a graphic organizer for students to plan their writing, writing paper and story starter prompts for students who need some help with ideas. As an extension, I’ve included directions for students to create a Wordle using their story. It is appropriate for 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th grades and meets the CommonCore Anchor Standards W.3, W.4, W.5, W.10, L.1, and L.2.

This is a quick and easy way to get feedback from substitute teachers. I attach it to my lesson plans. If you are a substitute teacher, this is a great tool to let the classroom teacher know how your day was.

Students look closely at the plot, setting and main character of the books they are reading and then give their own opinion of the book. This would work great as a center activity, follow up for literature circles or a classroom assignment. Can be done independently in 2nd - 5th grade and with assistances in K-1.

Students learn vocabulary on a deeper level by using the words in their own sentences, looking for synonyms and antonyms, and drawing a picture to help them remember the words. The half sheets can be stapled together to make a vocabulary book. This is appropriate for 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th grade.

Students solve addition problems with a strategy of their choosing. They find a partner who used the same strategy first. The partners find another pair who used a different strategy and explain why they used the strategies they did. This incorporates problem-solving, justifying their strategies in writing, and then explaining it to others.
