Decomposition Field Lab | MS NGSS MS-LS2-3 | Outdoor Investigation

Take your middle school life science students outside to investigate decomposition, decomposers, and matter cycling in a real schoolyard ecosystem. In this Decomposition & Matter Cycling Field Lab, students observe leaf litter, soil, plants, decomposer evidence, and nonliving factors, then use their field evidence to develop a model showing how matter cycles and energy flows through an ecosystem. This outdoor investigation is designed for realistic schoolyard science. Students do not need a for

Invasive Species Field Lab | MS NGSS MS-LS2-4 | Outdoor Investigation

Take your middle school life science students outside to investigate how a focal species may affect populations in a local ecosystem. In this Invasive Species Field Lab, students choose a focal species, collect field evidence about abundance, distribution, nearby populations, and habitat conditions, then use their observations to construct a Claim-Evidence-Reasoning argument. This outdoor investigation is designed for real schoolyard ecosystems. Students do not need to prove that a species is in

About the store

Experience

With more than 20 years of experience teaching and developing science curriculum, I create resources that combine scientific practices, environmental literacy, and structured outdoor learning to help teachers bring authentic science experiences into everyday instruction.

Teaching style

My teaching approach combines observation, data collection, modeling, explanation, and scientific discussion to help students build understanding through authentic outdoor experiences. Each resource is designed to support NGSS science practices while remaining practical, flexible, and easy to implement in real classrooms.

Awards & shining teacher moments

I have led student learning through citizen science projects, environmental stewardship experiences, and community-connected investigations that help students apply science in meaningful ways. My work has been recognized through honors including Teacher of the Year and grants supporting outdoor learning and nature journaling.

My own education history

My background includes advanced training in science education, curriculum design, environmental studies, and secondary science instruction. I hold a master’s degree in Teacher Leadership and additional professional training in AP Chemistry, AP Biology, and AP Environmental Science.

Additional biographical information

This store was created to help teachers bring engaging, standards-based outdoor science into middle school classrooms. Whether you need a quick field investigation, a nature journaling activity, or a larger NGSS-aligned unit, these resources are designed to be practical, student-centered, and grounded in authentic science learning.
