This activity is based on the book Cleopatra Rules written by Vicky Alvear Shecter. The family tree deals with the characters presented in the 6th chapter. The students get a list of pieces of information, as well as names that they need to place correctly in the tree.

This includes a pre-reading brainstorming activity (write down 5 facts about Thanksgiving that you already know), vocabulary questions, true or false and justify your answers, write down a summary of what you've learned. The text comes from History.com but it was shortened.

Here are ten words that can be used when talking about floods and hurricanes: Rainfall, Mississippi, Tsunami, overflowing, disaster, Katrina, disease, river flood, Yellow River, flash flood, coastal flood, vehicle. I am using this as a pre-reading activity for the novel Upside Down in the Middle of Nowhere. Each card contains the word, a definition, an example sentence, and then there is space for the students to write down their own definition or sentence, and illustrate the word.

This is a pre-reading activity for the book Upside Down in the Middle of Nowhere, or a great vocabulary activity if you are talking about Natural Disasters. This is a list of ten words, with pictures and definitions (fill in the blanks) and then a practice exercise with sentences in which the vocabulary word is missing each time. I am using this to get my ESOL students ready to read the book.

The students get 10 sentences in which a word is underlined. They have to choose the right part of speech and justify their answer.
