These bookmarks have been a lifesaver for me this year in the library! After students check out their books, they choose one of the bookmarks to color. This gives them a fun, new bookmark each time they visit the library, but it also gives them something to do while they wait for others to finish finding their books. I hope you enjoy using these bookmarks in your classroom or library as well! Sandy

Book Care for the New Year

Book care is a skill that I tend to review a few times throughout the year, but especially after winter break. I thought it would be fun to combine that review with setting New Year’s Resolutions for my younger students. Just print the pages double-sided like a booklet, and you're ready to go! I've also included an editable version so that you can use this for each new year! I hope you find this useful! Sandy

This is a fabulous unit that includes 36 separate lesson plans to use with your kindergarten students in the library or classroom. These lessons can be used if you are on a 6-week or 9-week grading period, or can also be used in isolation. Most activities correspond to either a Fiction or Non-Fiction book (sometimes both) that are common to libraries, but can also be easily purchased through Amazon.com if needed. Most activities are general enough that you can also substitute other books to g

My Practice Library Book

Last year, I decided to use the paperbacks as a “stepping stone” for my Pre-K and Kindergarten students. I attached the note to the paperback, and gave each student one book. We reviewed how to take care of their library book, and to keep it safe in their backpack. They were so excited carrying their practice books out of the library, and some of them were even holding their book like a baby, promising to take good care of them. Almost every student remembered to bring their paper

About the store

Experience

I'm a passionate teacher-turned-librarian who absolutely LOVES to inspire students and help them find their happy place in learning! Lessons by Sandy is a labor or love filled with engaging activities to support children on their journey as Lifelong Learners!

Teaching style

I whole-heartedly believe that when it comes to teaching, you have to reach a child's heart first. Once you have established a sincere relationship with your students, their learning will naturally follow. I also believe it's vital to show students how much fun learning can be, and to connect their learning to the real world. I accomplished this by creating collaborative, multi-sensory units of study that gave my students an opportunity to use higher level thinking and problem solving skills. Our class motto was "Find your happy place!", and I strived every day to make sure that each student succeeded in this endeavor.

Awards & shining teacher moments

I was awarded several 3M Ingenuity Grants for over $13,000 that I used to purchase additional supplies for varying units such as: 2003-2004 = 3rd Grade Inventor’s Workshop for $1229.59 2004-2005 = Our Backyard Science Lab for $3500.00 2004-2005 = Soil, Plants, and Animals, Oh My! for $2000.00 2006-2007 = Math Stations for Learning for $3500.00 2007-2008 = Attracting Student Scientists for $3500.00

My own education history

I received my degree in Elementary Education from the University of Texas in Austin, Texas. I also have a specialization in Reading, and a master's degree in Library Science from the University of North Texas.

Additional biographical information

I have always been fascinated with literature, and reading was always one of my passions. Throughout the years, I accumulated quite a collection of novels or picture books that helped students understand concepts or skills. Over time, I began to realize that my passion for books needed a more thorough outlet, which led me to pursue my master's degree in LIbrary Science.
