"I Have a Dream" Speech Analysis with DIDLS | With Sticky Note Activity!

Rhetorical analysis often feels abstract to students. They are told to “analyze the author’s choices,” but they are not always shown how to see those choices on the page. This resource was created to change that. Instead of starting with terminology and theory, students work directly with Dr. King’s words, marking, sorting, and thinking through how language creates meaning, tone, and impact. Using the DIDLS AP Analysis framework, students move from noticing to analysis in a concrete, visual way.

Teaching style

Close Reading is my bread and butter in my teaching. Allowing students to peel back layers of a complex text over time equips students with the tools necessary to build their stamina through literal understanding, analysis, and the ability to go beyond the text.

Awards & shining teacher moments

2019 Kinder Excellence in Teaching Award Winner | 2018 National Board Certified Teacher - English Language Arts/ Early Adolescence (Maintained in 2023)
