About the store
I am a speech language pathologist in my clinical fellowship year. I work in the public school setting supporting children of all ages, disabilities, and skill levels. My strength in language acquisition and sentence generation provides me with insights others may not see. Prior to being an SLP, I previously taught secondary education with endorsements in English Language Arts, German as a Foreign Language, and English as a Second Language. I taught literature, writing, grammar, and cultural lessons for nearly 10 years before discovering my "home" in speech language pathology.

Millie Fleur's Poison Garden: Emotional Inferences and Complex sentences

This is a narrative extension activity that builds off of "Millie Fleur's Poison Garden" by Christy Mandin. This is a great springtime narrative that generates conversations about inclusivity, growth mindset, and perseverance. See other resources in my store to find other extensions for the same book. As with most narrative extensions, this is best used after reading the text at least one time. This particular extension activity requires children to make inferences about emotional states and i

Millie Fleur's Poison Garden extension activity: finding the main idea

This is an extension activity designed to jump off of Millie Fleur's Poison Garden, by Christy Mandin. This is a great book to read during springtime to allow for connections with all the plant life sprouting. In this narrative, Millie Fleur grows strange and exotic plants. After reading the book, my students and I discuss that although that story is fiction, strange plants actually exist in our world. We dive into a nonfiction text about carnivorous plants. This text is written at around a 3r

"Strictly No Elephants" social language extension

Instead of getting angry and being mean in response, the young boy starts his own club that is completely inclusive. This activity provides practice for students to turn angry responses that the boy could have used, into calm, respectful responses. This book and extension activity help students practice empathy and inclusivity. Transforming potential nega

Main Idea Hand *Manipulatable*

What is this?I created a hand that I use with my students when discussing the main idea. I have seen many worksheets, but I wanted something concrete, without taking a sharpie the tiny fingers. This hand serves as a great introduction and reminder tool when finding the main idea. After students use The Main Idea Hand a couple of times, they find that they can rely on their own fingers as a visual reminder instead, thereby generalizing the skill and helping themselves. Teaching style

As a speech pathologist, I incorporate my experiences as a teacher to create worthwhile extensions to narratives. I use evidence based practices in my speech therapy sessions and specifically employ narrative intervention methods to target academic and social language needs. Narrative unit extensions also allow for natural lessons and practice opportunities specific to different contexts. As a teacher, I stood by the idea that project based learning is the best method. We incorporate all of the different content areas in each unit and make connections. I like a classroom with lots of little routines. Tongue Twister Tuesday, Math Facts Monday, weekly book talks, Fluency practice on Fridays, and even Reading for Fun every Wednesday.
