Using Cupcake Wars to Evaluate Employability Skills

Using the free Cupcake Wars Brave (Season 6, Episode 4) on Vimeo at vimeo.com/52265441, students can identify and evaluate some of the different soft skills employers look for in employees. This can be used in any work place class but fits best in a foods related classroom.

Patch Adams Movie Questions

This is a wonderful handout with questions to ask students after they view the movie Patch Adams. This can be used as a stand alone discussion starter or as a worksheet to pass out to students for a grade. There are 10 questions that are great for getting students to think about work beyond a paycheck.

Consumer Education: Deposit Slip Scenarios

A quick worksheet with scenarios students can use to write out deposit slips. This worksheet DOES NOT come with the deposit slips because I prefer to give students real slip from local banks. If you don't have time to do this, you can google image deposit slips and print them for free.

Father of the Bride Video Guide Worksheet

I am always surfing the net looking for movie guides for videos I show in class and then I usually end up making my own. This one is for Father of the Bride. I would use it in a Family and Consumer Ed. class when discussing marriage traditions, family, and family dynamics. Students will love looking at their own families and comparing them to what they see on the big screen. This worksheet also has guided questions about stereotypes and open ended questions that students of all abilities can

This is a simple yet effective follow along worksheet for students to use during any episode of Food Network's "Chopped." Students love watching this show and enjoy the small in house competition of attempting to choose who will win while documenting the secret ingredients and how they were used.

Boundaries and Rules: What Age Would You Allow Your Child

Need a fun lesson that engages kids about why we have rules? This lesson is a fun way to get kids to talk about what they would do if they were the parents. Students will work through over 30 different scenarios as a class to come up with what age their would allow their own children to do common (and some not so common) rites of passage into young adulthood. There is also a worksheet and answer key that can be used to add discussion or as an assignment.

Mystery Food Lesson Plan

This is a fun lesson that helps middle school/high school students understand why processed foods can be so unhealthy. This lesson is fun because students get to guess what the foods are. My students love that part! They also do a very good job picking out the different fats and sugars and only just occasionally need my help. This is a great lesson for a health class but if you teach family and consumer sciences or have access to kitchens, students can make hands on versions of popular process

Refusal Skills/Say No Worksheet

This is a quick worksheet for middle school students that will help reinforce the Say No, Tell Why Not, Offer Other Ideas, and Leave skills that they need. Many of the scenarios are not drug and alcohol related and this may fuel discussion with kids when they are put in hard situations that are not drug and alcohol related. Because many answers are correct there is not an answer key.

Social Health and Self Esteem: Peer Activity

Personality Analysis Internet Assignment and Questions

This is literally one of my favorite lessons I created this year! I found an amazing online analysis where my students (7th and 8th grade) were engaged and excited. Everything included is free after the TPT purchase. This lesson comes with a brief personality introduction within the worksheet and then step by step instructions for the student to follow along, followed by reflection questions. This assignment can easily be uploaded into a google classroom and it gold to leave for a substitute

Food Inc. Video Questions

Food Inc. is a very engaging movie. There is a lot of room for discussion and interpretation. I use this video assessment because it gives students a voice and allows them to comfortably express their opinion as long as they back it up with rationale. Students read the statements and decide if they agree or disagree with the statement and by how much. There is no key because answers vary.

Teaching style

I am a huge fan of many genres. I believe in experiential learning but I also find teaching kids in all grades how to read and read for learning increases their overall ability in all subject matter. I believe taking notes is a valuable tool but finding ways to make a lesson meaningful for kids should hold top priority.
