When studying lifecycles in my first grade class, I had my students choose an animal to research (I hatched chicks, raised tadpoles, and butterflies in my class). They used this template to fill in information they found through researching in picture books and the internet.
After the research was collected and added to the book, students added pictures and shared their book with friends and family!
This checklist was created for my students to use before they have a peer conference. I have my 3rd grade students use this list with colored pencils to look closely at their personal narrative and find out what they need to do to develop it into a stronger personal narrative. After students use this checklist, I have them peer conferences with friends first and then they meet with me to look over their piece of writing! I love this chart! It also helps kids to fix up punctuation, capitaliza
I originally created this chart for my 3rd grade students to use when they meet together for a peer conference. It highlights all of the parts of a personal narrative, and what "glows" or positive comments they could give their friend, as well as a "grow" and what their friend needs to work on. My students now like to use this chart to help themselves find a writing goal as they read over their own narratives. It is based upon small moment or seed idea stories.
This is a writing conference form I made for myself as I conference with my 3rd grade students on writing personal narratives. I studied extensively what a personal narrative should look like (based on a small moment seed idea story) and the important parts that should be included. I check off the boxes quickly as I conference, and take notes on my students "glows" and "grows" as a writer. The grow turns into their writing goal. It is so easy to use, and helps you really tune in on what to l
This is a checklist I created for my 3rd grade students on what to include in a good paragraph. I cut these sheets in half and keep a large supply of them in my classroom so my students always have access to them as they write and revise/edit!

I created this list to help me look closely at my first grade students sentences in a standardized testing situation. It lets you identify your student's strengths and weaknesses to guide your instruction.
I created this list of ideas to help my 3rd grade students create and develop the setting throughout their personal narratives. They post it in their writing journal and refer back to it when they are starting a new narrative!
Do your students get stuck when writing a lead? Want a way to spice up their story endings? Here are some tips! There are 3 to a page for Leads, and 2 to a page for endings. They can glue them in a journal or interactive notebook, or pull it out whenever they feel like they are in a rut!
Not sure how to get your students thinking and talking about poetry? This response sheet has students looking closely at a poem, to help them comprehend it at a deeper level.
I post these signs around my room at various centers when I hatch chicks in my class. Students will be able to refer to the words quickly and use the words in their science journal!
This organizer helps students to see that they must indent when writing a paragraph (with the shape of Utah flipped) and also important parts to a paragraph.
When I hatch chicks in my classroom, I let the students take the chicks home each night to care for them. This is an instruction sheet for parents and children on how to properly care for the chicks, so they return to the classroom alive!
In first grade while studying Fire Safety, I post this sign in a center with construction paper. I have students create posters that teach this concept using the information to guide/prompt them.
