Mathematics MYP Subject Overview (Algebra 1)

This subject overview was created by an experienced MYP math educator to support curriculum planning for a Year 3 or Year 4 Algebra 1 course in an IB-aligned classroom. It outlines the sequence of units—spanning linear, exponential, piecewise, absolute value, and quadratic functions—within a full academic year. While originally designed for use with the latest IB MYP planning format (2027 update), it can be easily adapted to the current structure. This free download does not include student mat

Teaching style

As a teacher, I balance inquiry and exploration with clear, logical structures that support both mathematical thinking and executive functioning. I design materials that align with overarching themes or statements of inquiry, serving as guided notes that help students build skills with purpose and context. Grounded in the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), my instruction is accessible, intentional, and responsive to diverse learners. As a Responsive Classroom practitioner, I integrate social-emotional learning and self-management strategies into daily lessons, fostering a classroom environment where students feel supported, challenged, and empowered to take ownership of their learning.

My own education history

I am an award-winning educator with over two decades of experience in teaching, curriculum development, and school leadership. I hold a BA from New York University in dance education and religious studies, an MA in contemplative education from Naropa University, and an MA in secondary mathematics education from Western Governors University. My honors include being named New Jersey Non-Public Teacher of the Year (2011), a finalist in the national Lexus Eco Challenge (2012), and a featured presenter at the 2022 IB Global Conference in the Netherlands. As an International Baccalaureate Programme Coordinator, I mentor educators and lead curriculum development aligned with IB philosophy, while also teaching middle school mathematics through both traditional and project-based approaches. I am passionate about using math as a lens for exploring social issues and understanding the world. Originally from a small community in Southern Oregon, I now live with my two children in a similarly tight-knit town on the banks of the Hudson River across from New York City, where we enjoy Devils hockey, and live jazz and dance performances.
