Determinants and the Matrix Inverse: the Matrix Tic-Tac-Toe Game

This is a great activity to bring group work and problem solving skills into the math classroom. The activity is a two-player game that helps students build their understanding on the relationship between invertibility of a 2x2 matrix and its determinant.  I have often used variations of this activity in college level linear algebra and find it to be a great writing exercise, or one for generating discussion among students.  The activity is presented as a worksheet. Experience

Since 2012 I have been working at Georgia Tech, where I teach, coordinate, support, and develop curriculum for undergraduate level courses. Most of my work involves supporting courses for advanced high school students taking undergraduate courses through distance education. Primarily linear algebra, differential equations, and the calculus sequence.

Teaching style

I strive to foster the habits of mind, the knowledge, the curiosity, and the skills that students need to be enlightened citizens in a society that needs mathematicians. These values guide my ongoing efforts to 1) foster a student- centered learning environment, 2) cultivate critical thinking skills and curiosity among students, 3) offer frequent feedback to students through formative and summative assessments, and 4) to identify ways to continuously improve the experiences of my students through informal evaluation and research. These efforts help me address the individual learning needs of my students, help them become aware of their own knowledge gaps, and guide them towards a path of being independent learners and enlightened citizens that seek to understand the world through a mathematical lens.

My own education history

Masters in Education in Distance Education (completed in 2018 from Athabasca University, Canada). Doctorate of Philosophy (completed in 2008 from the Department of Applied Mathematics, University of Waterloo, Canada).
