The growth of the 19th century American economy, in the North and South, was directly related to Eli Whitney's cotton gin and its ability to increase cotton production in the South. This increase in production led to a greater dependence on slave labor. Students will use primary and secondary sources to analyze this period in American History.

Lesson plan includes Do Now question, teacher notes, 3 page activity with primary and secondary source questions about Jefferson, Louisiana Purchase, Constitutional Power, and Lewis and Clark Expedition. Also there is an exit slip question.

Lesson plan including a Do Now, Notes, visuals, two-page handout, and an exit slip for US History, approximately 8th grade reading level. Do Now includes a picture of a wagon to get the students thinking about how wagons might change society. Notes are included for the teacher to lecture and/or place on the board for students to record. Student activity is a two column two page reading with questions hand out. There is also an exit slip to assess student comprehension.
