Students often think of mathematicians as people who are “good at math.” In their minds, mathematicians solve challenging math problems – correctly – the first time they attempt them. This resource is designed to help debunk the myth that math is “easy” for mathematicians. By reading about Katherine Johnson, Mary Jackson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Christine Darden in the picture book version of Hidden Figures, students will learn that real mathematicians are “good at math” because they never g

Help your students practice several math skills using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals with this fun holiday activity! Families will get involved too as your students share family recipes with their peers. This is great to link the math students learn in the classroom to the real world preparations for holidays and family dinners.
This geometric quest asks students to focus their attention on quadrilaterals and connect their learning to the real world by finding real life examples of quadrilaterals. I have used this quest in the classroom, but it can easily be adapted for use as homework. It is a differentiated product that includes two versions of the quest, a basic (*) and more advanced (**) version. Also included are fill-in-the-blank notes (with an answer key) about five different types of quadrilaterals (rhombus, rec
I have used this scavenger hunt as homework. In the younger grades, it relates in class learning about basic polygons to the real world outside of the classroom. In older grades, it can serve as a review of two-dimensional geometry. Either way, it is a fun activity that my students have always enjoyed!
Make good use of after-school screen time with this homework activity designed to help students practice basic elapsed time. When I gave this assignment to my students, they were thrilled to be able to watch TV for homework and eagerly completed the assignment. By "clocking commercials" as they watch their favorite show, students are telling time as well as calculating the elapsed time of each commercial break.
