I have taught almost every age group except Pre-K. I currently teach 5th grade Math, Science and Social Studies in TN but, I am certified K-6 all subjects.
These 7 math tasks evaluate a student's understanding of comparing and ordering fractions and decimals, multiplying fractions by whole numbers, dividing whole numbers by fractions, and solving real world problems that are relevant to 5th and 6th graders. By using problem-based learning, students develop their own strategies for computing with fractions, decimals and whole numbers to make sense of real life problems.
When administering these tasks, I use the phrases "Illustrate and explain" o
I spent hours making this the best and most memorable Math jeopardy game. While it is geared for 5th grade students, it could be used in other grades as well. If you need a Jeopardy game, feel free to contact me and I can take your questions and organize them into my format to provide your class with a fun and memorable review exercise. There is room for 31 questions without the Double Jeopardy. If you want an additional 30 questions as a double jeopardy round, I can arrange that too.
A memorable tune, mathematical vocabulary, and a practical application of an invaluable tool for problem based learning - Oh My Darlin' Number Line.
This slide show not only contains a song that I still hear my 5th graders sing in class but, it also contains valuable vocabulary and conceptual ties to prior knowledge to help students relate to how to use a number line. As adults we often do not realize the angst a student has while trying to choose an appropriate tool to solve a complex word
Help students engage in problem based learning with practical math tasks that follow the common core method of assessment. This slide show contains two division math tasks and two multi-operational math tasks. Both task pairs involve the use of technology in the classroom.
I use these types of activities with my 5th grade Math classes 3 days a week. The students so look forward to solving another "adult" problem that they are disappointed when we have to do something else.

Math tasks designed to develop critical thinking skills can be difficult to implement. Often a teacher struggles with creative and meaningful approaches to catch students' attention. These math tasks are created to catch students' attention and give them a path to develop critical thinking skills using the Common Core math practices.
This creative, easy to implement lesson will get and hold the attention of your students. They will be engaged in the activities and learn more than you expect. The conceptual learning model in Science lesson leads to increased understanding of how scientific concepts affect the world around us.
