This includes an evidence based graphic organizer in which students examine how Tennessee Williams critiques 1950's Southern society in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. The top part of the worksheet asks students to examine Williams's critical tone in the text. The bottom half includes a comparison of the play to two significant scenes in the 1958 film. Is Juliet an independent woman? Or is she easily controlled by men? Students will use the graphic organizer to include direct evidence from the play, a translation of the text into their own words and an explanation of their evidence as it supports their argument about Juliet. Students can either use this as an independent class assignment, and they can also use this as a preparation for a fully class debate.
A creative writing activity for students to write a script picturing if Romeo and Juliet ran off and living well into the future. Students have to use Elizabethan English in their writing and imagining if this is just young love that won't last, or if it is truly love at first sight. This includes directions for the assignment and a short example of student writing.
