Grammar Made Easy! 11th Grade Term 1 Bell Ringers, Quizzes, Games, Tools/Bundle

I swear by this simplified, easy approach to grammar! Students struggle with the punctuation rules because #1: there are so many rules to keep straight #2: teachers often use complicated terms and expect students to remember all of them and #3: many students lack a basic understanding of complete sentences and incomplete sentences. Why does this matter? Because when it comes to punctuation, it's as simple as knowing that anything incomplete needs "glue" (punctuation) to attach it to a complete s

The Great Gatsby Kill and Run ch 7 activity: music and art

Students read, annotate, and connect the lyrics of Sia's "Kill and Run" from the 2013 film soundtrack to the end of chapter 7. As they do, they'll better understand the complexities of Myrtle's death including who shoulders the blame and what her death symbolizes. This also includes a scaffolding activity to decode symbols in the novel, specifically the Eyes of T. J. Eckleburg. This works well for differentiated learning. Students who don’t often speak up during academic discussions will often

Term 2 BUNDLE: Grammar Made Easy: Sentence Combining: Mastering Punctuation!

If you are looking for an easy, clear way to teach students grammar, this is it. I've spent years teaching grammar, and I stand by one thing: the simpler the better. I teach grammar using formulas and scenarios that students can understand and apply. Oh and I also simplify it to the least-complicated verbiage. Term 1 was all about the foundation: students can't learn punctuation until they know the difference between an incomplete sentence and a complete sentence. Term 2--THIS BUNDLE--is all a

Looking at the list of 63 BINGO words, students have to look for common themes, patterns, or connections among the words. Then, students make three predictions that they think could happen in the chapter. Fina

11th grade Term 1 Bell Ringers: 8 Grammar Lessons-Complete & incomplete sentence

Grammar can be, and should be, simplified. I'm not one of those English teachers who knows all the technical terms. I’m googling things too! But I don't need to know what something is called in order to use it effectively in my writing. In the same way, students get frustrated when we over complicate grammar. They shut down and feel insecure about their ability to write. I 100% know that students can understand and effectively use correct punctuation and grammar in their writing.   However, th

I initially made this for my co-taught SPED students, but everyone loved it and benefited from it! My close reading guides are just that: they guide students through the chapter in a way that both teaches them HOW to close read and teaches them WHAT to notice. My reading guides also allow students to stop and reflect directly on the text. I am a huge believer in differentiation. Some years, I have students who can handle ALL of chapter 3. Other students need 80% of it. I have included two versi

Teaching style

If I'm talking, the students aren't listening to me for long. I know that students learn best when they are involved. Aside from teaching in the high school, I have 4 young kids. It was in my role as a mother that I learned the power of using my creativity to instill a love of reading into my children. In that way, motherhood transformed me into the teacher that I am today. Nothing makes me happier than bringing books to life in my classroom. I’ve worked hard to create fun, engaging, and effective activities that make reading magical for my students. No matter how young or old they are, all students love looking at literature in a new, creative, and outside-of-the-box way. My hope is to share more materials that will help all teachers become the engaging educators we all strive to be despite our lack of time to create the fun stuff.
