This full PDF packet contains chapter by chapter questions for the first book in the Sophie series written by Lara Bergen. This PDF packet also includes an answer page for those too busy to read the book. I use these chapter by chapter questions for my early finishers, it is a way to keep them busy and out of trouble while I work with those struggling. I print the questions out and kids who usually finish early have their own binders, these questions go inside of the binders. Alternately it can
This is a chapter by chapter question packet for the novel "Sophie the Hero" by Lara Bergen. This is an easy to assign activity for your higher level kids (RL 3). I assign this to my stellar readers to keep them busy while I work with my lower group.
This number line is an effective way to present numbers and operations in base ten. It is a tool that helps to show modeling and can be kept up all year. The number is written as a word, shown as a number and modeled using base ten blocks.
This PDF is an amalgamation of the different graphic organizers that I use to help support the writing process when teaching narrative writing to my first graders. There are two different sets in this package, that for my on and below level kids, and a more elaborate version for my above level kids. Both of the versions share a separate page for each step. At the end students can look back and see how they developed their idea.
Beginning to write in first grade is hard for both the teacher ans the students. Kids need to see structure on paper and in their mind. These basic graphic organizers help with the pre-writing, writing each with their own pages, then editing, revising and publishing can be done on the same type of page. A quick way for me to help kids edit is with a highlighter. I walk around with one and highlight any misspelled words, missing punctuation, or capitalization errors. if a child at their table can
This number line is in line with common core's emphasis on numbers and operations in base ten for first grade. The number line has the number in both numerical and word form, the twist is that below there is a visual representation of each number using tens and ones blocks. By having this on display through the year visual learners will absorb and solidify the concept of number sequence and place value. This version of this product has a safari (leaf) background.
This 12 page PDF is a poster showing simple steps to adding two digit numbers using manipulatives or student drawings. The steps leave room for teaching about regrouping without explicitly mentioning regrouping as a step. I find this is an essential poster in my classroom and you can reprint it as many times as you want if you don't want to get it laminated.
In this PDF document you have two different visuals. One poster shows the steps to adding two digit numbers, the other poster shows the way to use a hundred chart to add or subtract multiples of ten from a two digit number. There are plenty of review sheet from basic drills to problem solving applications. If you would like contact me and I can provide you with a much larger poster if you want it on display at no extra cost.
In this PDF I have created groups of sentences for your below, on, and above level groups. Each group will read their sentences and decide where to split the sentences in a way that creates a subject and predicate. They then need to color subjects (blue) and predicates(red) and glue them in the chart provided. You can have this done as group work, or if necessary individually. Teaching subject and predicate is a good preface for nouns and verbs.
These types of self guided questions are great to assign during reading group. It can help keep students on task and accountable while you attend to another small group. These questions can also be assigned as homework, or be done as part of a guided group. The book itself is entertaining and nice. I have used Junie B. Jones books in the past, but I feel that they praise negative behavior.
This PDF should be printed on card stock, or laminated. Estimate printing about 1 to 2 pages per student. In my class we call this game 'War', but call it it whatever you want! Basically it is played in pairs, where each kid has about 10 cards that are face down. On the count of three both players flip over a card, the first one to add both cards' numbers gets to keep both cards, the player with all the cards at the end wins. As they become more advanced I change the rules and they they have to
This slide show is in a PDF version. It contains vocabulary/ spelling words spelled -dge, which make the /j/ sound. There are ten words and multiple pictures for each word. I use this while working on the -dge spelling pattern (about one week). We go through the pictures/ words and spell each one to a musical beat. This helps target multiple senses to retain the new words.
This 9 page PDF contains 2 pictures of common math manipulatives including: ones, tens, hundreds, tape measures, square counters, cuisenaire rods, pattern blocks and cubes. There are two pictures of each. One picture can be placed on the actual container and the other picture goes on the shelf or wherever the permanent place is in the room. By using both visuals along with words all children can assist in the cleanup process!
This SmartBoard lesson/ quiz focuses on the first grade Common Core standard of Numbers and Operations in Base Ten (1.MBT. 1, 1.NBT.2, 1.NBT.3). Mini lessons introduce digits, and Tens and ones. Activities include making numbers and uses tens and ones clues as riddles, along with arranging numbers in numerical order.
Each day I have my first graders do a math choice board. Each child will get to pick 2 of 4 possible math problems. I indicate harder problems using a star, easier ones with a happy face. In order to help make sense of what each child gives me I have developed this generic handout. On it there is space for in depth thinking to be displayed, a math sentence and the answer. Below I have included a scoring section to make life easier.
This PDF document lists the steps of writing with vivid pictures and a brief explanation of each step. The steps are 1)think 2)write 3)add 4)edit 5)publish. The background of each page is a leaf theme which could fit in with any safari, rainforest, or nature theme. If you would like to have this without the leaf background let me know and I can provide it.
This poster is in two formats, both as PDF's. There is a single page and there is a poster size (six pages) that can easily be taped together to become a fixture in your room. The rhymes next to each coin is associated with a song on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2I9AlYp2zk&feature=share&list=LLff7oZpMIqDPUGY553v8uIw) . I encourage you to play the song and the video that goes with it as a way to introduce money to your class. Good luck!

This PDF includes a poster showing simple steps to adding two digit numbers using manipulatives or student drawings. There are six different sequential pages that guide children through the four basic steps to adding two digit numbers. None of these require regrouping. This product should be used at the very beginning when introducing two digit addition.
In presenting addition using common core, children are expected to visualize number patterns, without necessarily having to count them. The patterns up to the number six should follow those of a die, however past 6, a ten frame is necessary. This PDF document contains the visual patterns from 1 to 6 on a safari themed background.
