This activity can be given to the above level kids that finish early. After teaching that addends produce a sum, you can have kids use the sum to find addends. The workmat is included for those tactile learners.
This PDF can be used on the smartboard (or any projector) as tool to reinforce common core's emphasis on familiarity with spatial patterns. I set a goal, depending on your children's ability. Last year my goal was 60 in a minute, if the kids could reach that goal I gave them a pizza party. Once that goal was reached we decided on another goal (240 in 2 mins. ) Have fun with it, initially make sure that they point to the larger number and count on OUT LOUD for the smaller number. This is importan
Each day I give a version of something similar to this. These are basic math word problems for addition. I use my Problem Solving Template for Math (Common Core) to record student answers.
I do daily problem solving with my first graders. It is all common core based. There are many children who can do basic computation but who struggle with word problems. I suggest having children read the problems aloud and allow time for discussion.
Use these problems along with the problem solving template that I have created. It makes for easy and accurate assessments. Be sure to review/ reteach/ teach the importance of identifying the whole or the part based on information. This will help them with algebraic thinking crucial to common core.

Experience
I have taught for 8 years, always grade one, always at a Catholic elementary school.
Teaching style
A mix of whatever works for the current class. I prefer small group work, collaborative thinking and promoting independence. I like kids to discover the rule taught after observation.
