This directions page with rubric has the students pretend they are a water droplet, telling the story describing what they go through in the water cycle. They may start anywhere in the water cycle, such as in a puddle, or in a cloud. I had my students write the story on paper in the shape of a water droplet, mounted on blue construction paper.

What kind of reasons could the turkey give? Also think about what people might like to eat instead and describe the meals. Use plenty of details and creative adjectives to help make your argument convincing.

You are a scarecrow who is in charge of protecting all of the pumpkins in Farmer Fred’s pumpkin patch. I am shopping for a pumpkin to carve and put on my porch for Halloween.
Objective:
Write a persuasive essay from the scarecrow’s point of view and convince me why your pumpkins are not good for me to choose. Use plenty of details and creative adjectives to help convince me not to carve your pumpkins.

The students are excited to discover the various elements of this genre, such as exaggeration, symbolism, and things appearing in threes or sevens!

The Say It in Six activity allows students to focus on the key story elements when summarizing a story. While students are reading, I have them make a list of important words. Then, after reading, students are to select the six words that best summarize the entire story. Each word is written in one of the boxes and they use it to retell the story to the class, and/or write a summary. I have also had the students work in groups, and as a group they need to come up with six words they all agree on
