The Boat lab uses the is really a density lab in disguise. Students develop a procedure (usually water displacement) to determine the densities of unknown metals. They calculate density using their data and graph using class data. From the graph, students calculate the slope of the line (rise/run) and find that it is the density of the metal (mass/volume). They can then sort the metals given the density.
