Experience

Hi, I’m Dr. Tucker, founder of Math Beyond the Desk. With years of experience teaching high school Math, Science, and Technology—from Algebra to AP Calculus, Chemistry to AP Environmental Science, and Web Design to AP Computer Science Principles—I’ve worked in both public and Montessori schools. My journey has also included leadership roles as a school and district administrator, where I supported curriculum development and teacher growth. Teaching style

At Math Beyond the Desk, my teaching style reflects the Montessori philosophy, emphasizing student agency, hands-on engagement, and real-world learning. I specialize in creating lessons that help students see and understand the math that surrounds them, using movement, nature, and applied problem-solving to deepen comprehension. Whether it's exploring parabolas through water fountains or data science through real-world modeling, my goal is to make learning both empowering and experiential.

Awards & shining teacher moments

One of my most meaningful accomplishments has been the design of a nature-based math curriculum, allowing students to physically engage with mathematical concepts outdoors. I’ve also had the privilege of leading professional development for educators on Montessori secondary education, nature-based learning, and interdisciplinary curriculum design. My proudest moments always come from seeing students light up when they realize they are capable of mastering and applying complex concepts in ways that matter to them.

My own education history

I earned my Doctorate in Educational Studies from the University of Northern Colorado, where my dissertation focused on Nature-Based Mathematical Educational Environments. I am also AMI Montessori-trained (Adolescent Orientation) and deeply committed to integrating both academic rigor and holistic development into my teaching. My academic and pedagogical background continues to inform the resources I create for Math Beyond the Desk.

Additional biographical information

I'm not just a teacher—I’m a lifelong learner, nature lover, and curriculum creator. When I’m not in the classroom or designing resources, I’m usually hiking, swimming, reading a book, or looking for ways to bring natural elements into math instruction. At Math Beyond the Desk, I aim to create tools that help educators break free from rigid classroom routines and invite students to connect with math in a creative, grounded, and empowering way.
