Stock Market Project with The Lawn Boy by Gary Paulsen (Graphing Data)

This stock market project packet is to be used with the book The Lawn Boy by Gary Paulsen. This is always a favorite for my students. Not only are the kids engaged with the Read Aloud, students really enjoy picking a stock of their choice and diversifying $10,000 to create a portfolio. After collecting 5 days worth of data, they evaluate their portfolio to determine if any capital gains were made. Included in this purchase are step by step directions on how I use this when I teach it, along with

The Lawn Boy Read Aloud by Gary Paulsen PowerPoint Math Questions

This PowerPoint file is to be used with the read aloud book The Lawn Boy by Gary Paulsen. It is a great book that introduces the stock market (I use this PowerPoint file in whole group and print off slides to take for a grade). Some we do together and some we will just give as a pop quiz unannounced. I take the book a step farther and make an entire stock market, portfolio, line graph unit. Students purchase a stock of their choice with $10,000 (the remaining balance goes into a low risk saving

197 PowerPoint Slides 5th 6th Grade Review (Test Prep)

This is a 197 PowerPoint file that has many custom animations and sounds that can be used in whole group or small group. I prefer to use this file in small group settings in a computer lab that has Microsoft PowerPoint. Students that are near the same ability level partner up and work on this together. When a problem appears, they work it out, compare/discuss as needed, click to find the answer, and then click again for the next problem. EVERYTHING HAS ANIMATION and SOUND. This is also excellent

Test Prep Packet #8 NWEA PARCC ISTEP COMMON CORE

This is a comprehensive review of intermediate math as it relates to any statewide assessment for 5th and 6th grade level mathematics. The questions are written similarly to how my students are assessed each year. Key vocabulary words are used within the context of each question; some questions are wordy on purpose and provide several parts within the same question (answers also build within the question). This is a nice comprehensive review file before a 5th or 6th grader has to take a test in

39 PowerPoint Slides NWEA ISTEP PARCC CCRA Item Samplers Test Prep 5th/6th Grade

This is a 39 slide PowerPoint file that I have used some to help prep kids for ISTEP, NWEA, PARCC, and other Common Core type assessments (feel free to click on preview to see all the questions). Most of these slides I will do each day as a way to start math class (bell ringer/1 or 2 per day leading up to testing). I project on my PowerPoint and then also pdf the file and post on my class website. Students then open the questions up in PaperPort from their iPads. I do several slides each day to

5th Grade Test Prep #5 CCRA, NWEA, PARCC, Common Core, Assessment

This worksheet is geared to improving test scores at the intermediate level (5th and 6th grade). It is formatted in a way that is ideal to statewide assessments that hold students, teachers, and schools accountable for learning. I use these type of worksheets weekly in my classroom. I post the answer key online and/or have available for students around the room; those that "cheat" and "copy" answers work with me at the back table in addition to those that need some extra help. This year the stud

Line Plot Data Display Mode Median Mean Range TEST PREP #1

This is a data display worksheet that involves desegregating data from a line plot when finding the mode, median, mean, and range of various values. LINE PLOTS have been a focal point on my math standards here in Indiana. Use this worksheet to help prepare students for statewide assessments. Answer key included.

Place Value of Whole Numbers and Decimal Worksheet

This is a nice worksheet to do after some study has been done with both the place value of whole numbers and decimals. I usually pull my lower kids to work with in a small group while the rest of my class works on this independently. I post the answer key online for kids to check afterwards from my class website or if I feel kids are "cheating" the system and not learning/fixing mistakes on their own, I will print off a hardcopy or two to keep at my desk with me.

These item samplers are similar in format to the wording of statewide assessments relating to Common Core. This is a 4 page file that includes a 4 page answer key that I post in a variety of ways to assist students in their learning during "independent" work time in class. Test Prep #7 NWEA CCRA Common Core Review Packet

This is a 6 page file that previews and rehearses with students multi-step word problems as it relates to 5th and 6th grade math standards. The remaining 6 pages are answer keys. This is a critical component I do with my students on the days/weeks leading up to any statewide assessment in which one's scores are heavily evaluated for both teacher and school performance. Review material is key to do in addition to rehearsing the types of questions that are done on such statewide assessments.

I use these files for independent practice, homework, or small group activities.

Composite Solids, Volume, Word Problems, Test Prep

This is one example of a multi-step word problem on VOLUME in which the previous answer builds into the next problem, similar to any statewide assessment given to kids. I usually will pull kids to work with in a small group setting that need more help. Teaching style

Never let the brain stop working. Stimulating the brain is most important. Constant review is always spiraled in lessons everyday. I use these worksheets and Power Points daily and frequently pop quiz to hold students accountable. All students are always randomly called on to keep them honest and engaged 3-4 times per class when whole group instruction is used; independent work time and small group instruction to rep out math problems are critical to do each day. Students are expected to work as the expectations are set high; it can be a culture shock to start the year, but students show great growth.
