Linear Combinations of Random Variables (IB HL Applications and Interpretations)

A handout that leads students in an experimental fashion to discover how to do linear combinations of random variables. Very useful for IB HL Applications and Interpretations students as the content is catered to them. Examples are incorporated and answers are included. Requires for examples: normal distribution, Poisson distribution, binomial distribution, finding expected value from a discrete probability distribution

The z-test and t-test, IB HL Applications and Interpretations

In this fun activity, students are introduced to the z-test and t-test. They will spend 10 minutes taking a quick IQ test to generate data (which is included with answers), which will then be used to explore the question 'is the IQ of our class higher than that of the general population'. Unbiased estimators are also introduced. Full teacher version with answers included, although the answers will be different depending on the outcome of the student quizzes. Geared towards Higher Level IB Applic

Overview of 9 statistical tests IB Applications and Interpretations Higher Level

An example for all of the 9 different types of statistical tests used in IB Higher Level Applications and Interpretations, with answers provided. Type 1 and 2 error calculations and using critical regions also included. All answers are provided.

Series of lessons and project on creating generalisations

A sequence of 2 sessions (both of which will require multiple lessons) together with a project. The students will find formulae for: - sum of angles in a polygon - one internal angle in a regular polygon - one external angle in a regular polygon - number of diagonals in a polygon Students will also be led through a reasoning process for each one. There is a session involving investigating building arches using isosceles trapezoids, and a capstone project involving finding the number of diagonals

Regression and Coefficient of Determination IB AI HL

In this self-guided lesson, students learn how to find and interpret coefficient of determination. They will also explore why coefficient of determination should not be used alone as a measure of how good the model is. Some familiarity with calculator use is assumed, such as finding a line of best fit and Pearson's Product Moment Correlation Coefficient. Aligned for the IB Higher Level Applications and Interpretations course. This is a great follow on from my free resource, 'Least Squares Regre

Binomial Distribution Introduction Self-Guided discovery (IB SL and HL AI)

This self-guided discovery will allow students to investigate the properties of the binomial distribution through a series of guided examples. By the end, students will know the properties of the binomial distribution, the formula for expected value of the binomial distribution, the use of the calculator binompdf and binomcdf functions and be able to interpret word problems correctly. The students will need 3 dice each for an experiment, although the experiment can be done in small groups as we

IB HL Paper 3 practice task (AA & AI versions)

This task involves optimising the shape of a prism to make the surface area as small as possible. It involves the writing of expressions from diagrams, calculus, limits and L'Hopital's Rule, modified to also be suitable for Applications and Interpretations (without L'Hopital's Rule). It is an excellent resource for both HL classes and will challenge your students to do complicated problem solving.

Univariate Data overview for IB Applications and Interpretations

Univariate data is usually already somewhat familiar to students in both SL and HL IB Applications and Interpretations. In this overview, students will review what they know, as well as have an opportunity to learn some simple skills that may be new to them. Everything is covered except for cumulative frequency: mean, median, mode, range, quartiles, IQR, grouped frequency tables, variance, standard deviation, box and whiskers plot, pie chart, bar chart, outliers. Students use some data gathered

Teaching style

I strive for a fun and engaging set of mathematical activities that allow students to be given rigorous examples of how to reason, and are led step by step to reason in these ways themselves. Many project and discovery based activities assume students have these skills already, which in my opinion is a mistake - these are high end skills that must be learned through use. I use no AI whatsoever to create my lessons and projects as I believe it generates less high quality products than what I can produce myself.

My own education history

I hold a PhD in Computational Number Theory from the University of Cambridge. I have a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Pure Mathematics from the University of Groningen.
