Getting the Most from Your Math Book - Discussion Questions & Mini-Poster

Most students use a math book to do their assignments. But rarely do students READ a math book. But some people do use math books for other reasons. Like looking at examples, for reference or (heaven forbid) to teach themselves. Regardless of why you open a math book, knowing a bit about it can be helpful. This small packet has discussion questions along with a mini-poster of the parts of a math book. For more info, check out this post on How to Read a Math Book on MathFour.com.

Comparing Algebra Problems with Examples and Solutions

Students struggle with comparing their work to an example. This activity helps them learn to dig into solutions and compare them - seeing where there are commonalities and where there are differences. (Note, they don't have to know anything about algebra to do this - it's merely a comparing exercise.) Give it a try and let me know how it can improve. I'm deploying this today! ~Bon

About the store

Experience

I have over 25 years in teaching and tutoring math - 17 years of which have been in the classroom. I'm currently teaching math at a private special education school to students ages 12-20 and developmental level 2nd grade - 12th grade.

Teaching style

Having struggled through strange and interesting bits of math myself, and having tutored my best friends in math through high school and college, I have a teaching style that works very well with students who are less than confident in their abilities. What I've always told them is this: "I'm not better in math than you are, I'm just more confident."

Awards & shining teacher moments

I had a student switch schools once to continue to take my classes!

My own education history

Bachelors and Masters Degree in Mathematics

Additional biographical information
