I have experience teaching in both suburban and urban districts. I have taught content from 7th grade to Advanced Placement Calculus (and anything in between).
This letter can be used as an introduction to the course and the summer assignment. A sample summer assignment is provided for use with the Demana Finney Kennedy Watts textbook:
Calculus: Graphical, Numerical, Algebraic, 3rd Edition. This should be given to students in about 3 weeks before the end of the school year to ensure questions regarding the course can be provided. Please note: the letter indicates areas in which email and school name must be filled in!
This can be used as a welcome activity for any (math) class. I keep these posters hanging for the duration of the year. Throughout the year, I return to these posters and ask students if they feel their specific requests are fulfilled, and if they are keeping up with what they themselves said was needed.
The best way for students to know how they are doing in a class is for them to recognize that they are accountable for their work. This simple document is an easy and organized way for students, each time they place graded items into their progress folder, to record their grades (according to a unique breakdown) and comment on their progress.
