Laminate the 15 Olympic Event Cards. These are all math word problems (elapsed time, order of operations and measurement). Place two to three cards on six different tables. Divide your students into six groups. Students will rotate through six 2014 Sochi Olympic Math Challenge Stations in cooperative groups. Give students about 8 minutes at each station and then signal them (through perhaps Olympic music/pictures of Sochi, or actual pictures of events from the winter Olympics) to rotate to
Tons of Fun. Place two task cards at 6 different stations. Students must solve math problems involving: order of operations, understanding math vocabulary, basic math facts, roman numerals, and fun number facts. Once they have solved the math they will have learned a fun fact about the Wizard of Oz.
Directions: This is a fun and very engaging activity. Students are divided up into cooperative groups. They rotate around to all six stations where they do some reading about twelve different Guinness World Records and solve 22 different math problems on converting measurement(inches, yards, feet, hours, minutes, seconds, months, years).
