This resource initially focuses on the ideas of area being the covering of space in two dimensions and perimeter as being the boundary around an area of space. Comparing Fractions

This interactive Powerpoint (consisting of 46 interactive slides plus printables) helps pupils to compare fractions. When asked to compare or order fractions, pupils sometimes automatically think about finding common denominators, and in some cases, this is what is needed. However, there are also situations where pupils can use reasoning, such as when the fractions have the same denominator, the same numerator or can easily be compared to 1 or ½. Using fraction circles, fraction strips, fract

Getting outside for PE at this time of year usually involves some form of athletics, even if only in the form of practice for the fast-approaching Sports Day. This presents an excellent opportunity to practise measuring which is such an important but sometimes neglected part of teaching measures. Also, we obtain relevant data that can then be used back in the classroom.

We have all experienced students performing badly on tests, despite their ability and understanding, simply because they have not used any reasoning when working on their calculation. This presentation asks pupils to state why the given answer is wrong without working out the answer, so they have to use reasoning.

Teaching style

Lessons have to be engaging and fun within a classroom environment which celebrates mistakes (because then I can see what they and others are thinking!) and encourages pupils to make conjectures and pursue these. It is also vitally important that teachers learn something from every lesson about pupils' learning, misconceptions or difficulties so that we can reflect and make pupils' experiences richer and increase both their understanding and enjoyment of mathematics.
