The story of Square Bear and his friends Triangle Prince, Rectangle Horse and the beautiful Polygon Princess, teaches children to recognize shapes in a plane: polygons and closed curves. This lesson plan, which also encourages creative writing, is based on the text. Square Bear is a fairytale of polygons and closed curves. This lesson plan creates new characters for the story. Children construct the characters from triangles cut from regular polygons: squares; rectangles; pentagons; hexagons.Then they analyze the shapes used in the characters other children have created and write stories for the characters. This plan addresses Math Common Core State Standards for grades k and 1.
