My goal is to increase engagement through hands-on learning and increase critical thinking through rigor. Students get worksheets, art projects, and posters in every other class. Science is the chance to mix it! Every creature uses play as a learning tool, so I make sure we play in class (safely) by doing fun, silly, weird, and cool science. I maximize the number of labs I do with some lecture between to make sure we cover the prerequisite knowledge or review.
Many labs I do, that I offer here, are heavily scaffolded so even Junior High students can get them, sometimes with help, but they can be offered to High School or even college level with tweaks to increase or decrease scaffolding as needed. All of my questions revolve around the scientific method and critical thinking. No multiple choice: application is the goal. If you find anything too hard, you can easily add information to the questions to make them easier. You might also just focus on the lab procedures for a fun day of science.
Because of the challenging nature of my lessons, I allow corrections once on wrong answers (except for tests). Some kids learn best from failing. Being allowed to fail and stand back up again build confidence, challenges gifted and talented, and teaches hard-work. It also motivates students to try harder the first time so they don't have to correct the second.
