Use this activity to model subtracting fractions in a fun and yummy way! Students will cut the Sour Patch Kids in order to create common denominators and then borrow from the whole if needed by cutting up another Sour Patch Kid. My students love this activity and it helps them to understand what borrowing is with fractions.

Students answer basic questions about themselves to get the numbers to use for their division problems (some will have 2 digit divisors some have 1 digit divisors). After they have answered the questions they will be given a set of questions to solve to find the specific requirements for their haunted house. This is a fun way to practice basic division, multi-task directions, and to integrate creativity.

Present the card to the students and have them form a word problem where the answer is the one stated on the card. You can have students make one-step problem or make it more difficult and ask them to make a multistep problem. I often will allow the students to give their question to another student to solve.
