Draw a Scientist Activity

Created by
Megan's Lab
This is a great "First Week" activity that will help your students see themselves as scientists -- literally! I used a version of this activity at the beginning of the year last year, and modified it for this year after noticing a missed opportunity for students to examine their own biases about who "is" or "isn't" a scientist. Students first draw what they think of when they think of a "scientist", and then talk about what they drew. Of course, at the end they have a chance to draw themselves!

This is the Summary Table template that I use with my students. I wanted to make sure it was available as a free resource since I mention it in many of my other lessons and units! For those unfamiliar, a Summary Table is a useful sense-making tool for phenomenon- or driving-question-based units. It is a way for students to keep track of each activity they've done, what they learned from it, and how it helps them answer the driving question or explain the phenomenon. Experience

Hi! My name is Megan O'Donovan. I have taught high school science for two years. I've taught a little bit of everything -- biology, chemistry, physics, earth science, engineering, you name it!

Teaching style

I do my best to teach the way the Next Generation Science Standards were intended: with a phenomenon anchoring every unit, and as much student-led inquiry as possible. For any concept, I try to avoid using lectures or textbook readings, and instead try to think of a way students could figure out the idea themselves from data or observations.

My own education history

I attended K-12 school in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. I completed my undergraduate education at Michigan State University, getting Bachelor's degrees in Genetics and Psychology before switching to teaching. I did my student teaching in the Lansing, MI area and am certified in Biology and Integrated Science. I am now working on a Master's degree in Teaching and Curriculum, and am applying for doctoral programs for next fall.
