This is a lesson I taught my students, who are in third grade but it is completely appropriate for older students. Students will identify generalizations of grown-ups then complete a close read of the text, locating examples of generalizations. This lesson includes a lesson plan, differentiated instruction, and photos/examples of my class work.

Teaching style

For reading, I mainly use a whole group to small group approach in a two-book classroom. For math, I use the same whole-to-small group approach and centers. In math, my students explore to find the correct method then we discuss and practice. I use the 5E lesson planning template to plan and implement my math lessons. Additionally, I use assessments to plan centers weekly or biweekly for students to enrich, practice, or have a reteach of skills. In reading, depending on the skill, I have my students try to figure out how to solve a problem or use a strategy on their own and then we practice with graphic organizers and writing. Many times I teach a skill whole group and then students work independently using the skill in a seperate text. During this independent time I pull two or three groups to work with the skill in the text that they are reading.
