Experience

This is my 30th year working in Special Education. I have worked a variety of different jobs in the field. I have been a teacher, consultant, researcher and administrator. I have taught students with learning disabilities, severe emotional and behavioral disorders, and children and youth with autism spectrum disorders in both rural and suburban areas.

Awards & shining teacher moments

I was the 2007 winner of the Kansas Council for Exceptional Children’s Award of Excellence. This award honors an individual who has made significant contributions in the education of children with disabilities, through development of new concepts, approaches or programs, new techniques for diagnosis or rehabilitation, and improved psychological or educational evaluation procedures.

My own education history

I received my Ph.D. in special education from the University of Kansas, specializing in the areas of severe emotional and behavioral disorders and autism and Asperger Syndrome. I was the former director of the Autism Asperger Resource Center (AARC) at the University of Kansas Medical Center.
