Awards & shining teacher moments

For the past eight summers, I have helped bring teachers and students to the Dominican Republic as part of "Friends Beyond Borders." During these social justice expeditions the teachers toured the Haitian border, visited an HIV/AIDS orphanage, spoke with civil rights activist Sonia Pierre, and heard firsthand stories from the legendary Dede Mirabal from the famous novel, "In the Time of the Butterflies." 2002 - Teacher of the Year 2005 - "The Classroom" ranks as #26 on the Barnes & Noble Top 100 Books list. 2006 - Hipp Grant winner for Friends Beyond Borders. 2007 - Home stay student trip to southern Italy. 2008 - GQ Magazine's "Better Men, Better World" Award. 2009 - "Roam Italy" ranks as #68 on the Barnes & Noble Top 100 Books list. 2010 - Central New Jersey's "Teachers Who Make Magic" Award. 2014 - "The Dominican Experiment" made the Barnes & Noble's Top Ten Bestsellers List in its debut weekend. 2015 - "The Dominican Experiment" reached the #1 spot on Amazon.com in the category of Caribbean and Latin American Politics. 2016 - "The Dominican Experiment" received the 2016 National Indie Excellence Award - Best "Current Events" Book. 2016 - "The Dominican Experiment" was referred to as "a moving story" about "identity, diversity, justice and action" in a book review in Teaching Tolerance magazine.
