Documetary Comprehension

I grew up on science documentaries! When I show a documentary to my students, I want them to absorb what they see. The only way to know for sure if they were really watching is with a summary sheet. This one page assignment works for any documentary.

Teaching style

I believe the fire of learning begins with the spark of excitement! Teaching is no different than entertaining. When I enter my classroom, I am on a stage...and if I don't perform well...my audience will not want to return. I like to equate education to healthy eating. If you offer a child a carrot...they're going to turn their nose up at it. If you take that carrot and blend it with some strawberries and bananas...they will never know they ate it! Education is no different. Put your lessons in a fun wrapper and they will look so appetizing, your students will never know they're even learning. Once they do...they will realize how much they love it!!!

Awards & shining teacher moments

The greatest honor is being a husband, father, and teacher. I have no need for anything else.

My own education history

I started school in Suffolk County, NY. My kindergarten class was a mix of two parts happy with a sprinkle of sappy. In second grade, I moved to the Bronx. My public school transition was one of complete culture shock an horror. This lasted a year and a half until my parents decided I needed to go to catholic school. I went to Catholic School straight through high school. Started my college career at Westchester Community college. After two years, I was accepted to Manhattan College. Upon my graduation from Manhattan, I promptly applied for an was accepted to a dual masters program at the College of New Rochelle.

Additional biographical information

You may notice my picture is of the Superman symbol. About seven years into my teaching career, I got tired of students being sent to my room looking for the wrong "Mr. S". So I decided I would differentiate myself by using the Superman symbol as my moniker. Not only was the character a huge part of my childhood, but an inspiration to me as a teacher. He always gave himself for the good of others. The character is the symbol of selflessness and hope. I have not only associated the character's symbol with my last name, but have internalized the characters values. My students soak it up and love referring to me as "Superman". I may not be able to fly or stop bullets, but I will always give of myself for their betterment. I hope that by associating myself with this iconic character, I leave an impression that will last a lifetime.
