Reading is the foundation of learning. As educators, we work tirelessly developing strategies where our students are interacting with written language. As a math teacher, my job is compounded with the challenges of reading. Not only do students have to interpret numbers, they have to read to decipher information.
Over the years, I allowed the “standards” to guide my instruction. In my opinion, the standards create too much confusion for students thus shutting them down. This time, I have a new
Formatted in PowerPoint, a Cartesian grid. The values go from -10 to 10. To edit the numbers, follow these steps. Go to Edit, choose select all; go to Format then arrange choose un-group. Now you can access the numbers. To edit the size of the actual grid, just click on the grid and stretch. Note: You may have to adjust the numbers as you adjust the size of the grid.
Using a word document, I created a number line -20 to 20. I printed out the document on card stock then spliced it together for individual number lines at my students' desks. It is tedious but worth it, I did take it a step further and laminated the number lines before I taped it to each desk in my classroom.
