Pythagorean Theorem Discovery

Created by
MidMath McG
This activity is meant for students to discover the relationship described by the Pythagorean Theorem. There are three right triangles and one scalene triangle, each drawn with squares off of their sides. Once students find the area of each square, teachers can ask them to look for a relationship between the area of the squares. Students will be able to see that a^2+b^2 = c^2 in the right triangles but not in the scalene triangle. This is a great activity to introduce the Pythagorean Theorem, al

Use this activity to practice finding slopes from two points and create new working groups in your classroom. Students are given a problem unique to them and directed to find the slope. Multiple strategies are encouraged. After they find the slope, they must find other students in the room that have the same slope.

This one page student survey is a quick way to get to know your students. It includes questions that will allow you to get some insight into your student's interests to help you build connections. This can be used at the beginning of the year or when starting with a new group of students at any time. The Google Doc is fully customizable so you can edit questions to fit your class and teaching style.

Use this activity as way to introduce exponential functions using a percent growth. Students will make the connection that an increase of 3% is equivalent to multiplying by 1.03. Students are then lead to make the connection that repeatedly multiplying by the same number can be done with an exponent. I started this lesson with a video explaining inflation and then had students work in groups of 3 or 4 on this worksheet. This is an awesome way to connect to students, talk about their favorite m

Experience

I have been teaching middle school math for 11 years in the suburbs of Chicago, IL. I've taught grades 6th, 7th, and 8th as well as our district's Honors Geometry course.

Teaching style

My favorite lessons to do with students are ones that help them build connections with their previous knowledge, have them discover a new connection related to the intended learning goal, and recognize how to apply their new knowledge. I design lessons so that students can work with all different types of learners, capitalizing on ideas brought to the table by people that have different strengths. I also love a good review game that gets all students involved, ideally with just the right about of competition.

My own education history

I am a National Board Certified Teacher in Early Adolescent Math. I have a Masters degree in mathematics and a Bachelors degree in Math / Math Secondary Education.
