My name is Dr. Kayla Blankenship. I have been teaching for 15 years, working in both Florida and Georgia. I taught third grade for 7 years, fourth grade for 3 years, fifth grade for 3 years, math intervention for 1 year, and Math Lab - an innovative mathematics experience for all students in grades K-5 - for 1 year. I spent 8 years in urban schools and 7 years in suburban schools, 7 years in schools focused on project-based learning, and have spent 4 years teaching explicit, systematic phonics instruction across multiple grade levels.

My own education history

I earned my doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction, specialized K-8 Mathematics Education from the University of Central Florida (2024). My dissertation, entitled, "Mindful Approaches, Transforming Hearts: Cultivating Elementary Students’ Positive Mathematics Identity Development Through an Equity-Based Morning Mathematics Club", examined how third through fifth grade students’ mathematics identities developed through a strengths-based mathematics club focused on equitable teaching practices. Prior to earning my doctorate degree, I earned my master’s degree in K-8 Mathematics and Science Education from the University of Central Florida (2019) and my bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from Point University (2012).
