About the store
Having taught almost 30 years, I have a wealth of knowledge to share about the field of education---some good knowledge, some not-so-good knowledge, and some knowledge that might just blow your mind, or not.
I decided to name my store and blog "Mining the Magic" as a tribute to those magical moments that surface often unexpectedly in the classroom. After this much time in education, however, I realized that those magical moments are never random; lots of planning, hard work, and the establishment of a community of learners precludes these extraordinary, and seemingly magical, times in the classroom.
Currently, I "mine" the "magic" in Room 320 at Sonora High School. In the past 29 years, I've been known to teach Early Childhood Handicapped, 8th Grade ELA, self-contained elementary, and even adults as a consultant at Education Service Center XV.
While I am turned into a claustrophobic mess at the thought of actually spelunking in a natural cavern, the lovely formations that occur in the classroom fascinate me. It's with this eye for a "jewel" with a student that I set out to explain how to "mine the magic."

Reading Record for Conferencing
Every Friday I carve out time for reading conferences. Throughout the week, students record their book pages on this form (one per student). At the end of the week, we check to see that goals are met and establish reading goals for the upcoming week. I write the goal in the box labeled "Page Count GOAL!," and both the student and I initial in the small boxes in that larger box, thus confirming our conversation about reading goals.

Teaching style
I use reading-writing workshop in my sophomore English II and PreAP English II classroom. By meeting the need of individual students through workshop, I can leave school knowing that I met students where they are in their growth in the area of English language arts.
Awards & shining teacher moments
I have served on the Executive Board of the Texas Council of Teachers of English Language Arts (TCTELA) for six years, currently serving as the Executive Secretary. I have also served on committees through the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). Twice, I have presented at the NCTE Convention and numerous times at TCTELA. My regional Education Service Center hosted me at several inservices, as well.
My own education history
I attended Angelo State University, receiving my BS of Education. More recently, I attended Lamar University, receiving my MS of Education in Educational Technology Leadership as well as my mid-management certification.
