We use this chart to introduce the properties of addition and multiplication. We use the phrases and pictures as clues to help us remember the meaning of those "mathematician" words like commutative and associative. The students fill in the last two columns with examples for addition and multiplication equations for each property. The distributive property is not included on this chart. We save that one for a lesson later in the year.

To celebrate the new year, present this unique challenge to your gifted math students. The directions are explained on the worksheet. Students will need to use math processes to arrive at the value of the new year number, beginning with their age number and moving through ten steps. Students will begin to see the magic of numbers, patterns, and the power that we have in arriving at the answers we need, sometimes through some trial and error, as they complete this New Years Math Challenge.

Ohio has now granted schools the ability to create online assignments for students to complete on snow days. Here's what I have created for my Title 1 Math students. There are nine different activities to choose from. They pick one math activity to complete at home for each day they are out. To show proof that the activity was completed, there are lists or questions that they have to write down and turn in as well as a parent signature. This math center game includes teacher directions and three student worksheets. With egg cartons, students can review their basic addition and multiplication facts. They can also practice adding multiple addends. Engage your active kinesthetic learners!

Using the digits of the new year- 2, 0, 1, and 4 students rearrange the digits to create 4 new numbers. The worksheet also provides practice with comparing numbers, place value, digit value, and expanded form.
