Then after students have brainstormed their ideas, as a class they start putting their fractions on a number line. Halves, Thirds, Fourths, Fifths, Sixths, Eights, Tenths and Twelfths have been provided Promote math talk by asking questions about how they know the placement and how they can defend their answer. If numbers are really close and students are stru

Box and whisker plots pose many problems for students. They often confuse the length of a quartile for the size of data it includes. After seeing my students struggle with this concept for years (even more-so because they had to analyze the data, not merely create the plot) I came up with this activity. The coloring piece, coupled with the dollar bill comparison made something click. I've used the activity ever since! **Please note this activity uses the American Dollar Bill as a portion of a

Pi day is March 14th! These are the perfect addition to your instruction! Pi is a name given to the ratio of the circumference of a circle to the diameter. Basically, you can take any circle and divide the circumference (think distance around the circle) by the diameter. Pi is an irrational number meaning that it never ends and the decimal pattern doesn't repeat. The coolest part about pi is that there is no known pattern to the decimal digits. Want your students to explore the decimal digits
