Weekly high frequency/easily confused/homophonic words with a list, practice sentences and quizzes with progressive difficulty. I also do a daily practice in writing journals where I ask the kids to compose their own sentences using the words correctly. I usually define for them, but they can also define in groups and by paraphrasing the dictionary definitions. Each group can be done daily and culminate in the quiz at the end.

Use this simple summary sheet for students who are new to reading chapter books OR need support in the upper grades. I created it for the use of my SPED readers to prepare for AR tests.
Encourage students to explore the inner workings of a story character OR their character in a play with this relevant and fun project. Students will use their own music service or Spotify Webplayer to browse music genres and pick 4 songs that represent their character. Suggest they think about their character's energy level, personality, preferences and then listen to music outside their own preferred style (browsing genres, etc) and pick songs that speak to the character and not themselves. Use this reading log to gauge the close reading of your students on outside or AR books. A copy of my owl bookmark is one side with symbols the students can use as they read on their own. I also have my students use post-its in their AR books with these symbols, so they can just choose several to include on their log.
