Mr Buck
This 2-3 day math project gets students thinking about polynomials in the real world. Students design a box from a sheet of paper with the purpose of maximizing the volume and then display the entire mathematical process on a poster. Students add graphs, a model of the box and explain the entire mathematical process in a logical and sequential order. This project gets students working in groups, discussing ideas and writing about the process they take to solve a problem. Many find the poste

The Nenana Ice Classic is a contest that is over 100 years old. Every spring, Alaskans place bets on when the ice will flow out of the Nenana River. A few dollars for a ticket can make you rich if you pick the right time right down to the minute! In this activity, students learn how to compile over a hundred years' worth of data and create a histogram plot. From their data tables and charts, students learn how to interpret data and draw conclusions based on scientific thought processes. Stu

Sometimes kids in AP Calculus take longer to learn a concept and need a second chance. This extra credit opportunity provides a rubric for students to create their own Free-Response Question. Students learn better when they apply their knowledge (even if incomplete) to creating and solving their own problems. As they say, teaching is the best way to learn. Students find this extra credit opportunity enjoyable and challenging. Furthermore, it allows the teacher to use the student-generated FR

Review solving rational expressions with this twinning activity. Students are partnered up in pairs and each receive a set of 6 problems. Though the problems are different, each partner should get the same answer. The rules are as follows: Partners may not move on to the next problem without having both agreed on the answer. If a partner finishes a problem before the other, they must watch their partner's work and check it for errors as they work.If partners disagree on an answer, they must ex

This is a great, culturally-responsive way to do a quick review of solving rational equations. Partners are randomly assigned by teacher. Each student receives their own set of unique equations, but they and their partner should arrive at the same solution. Students will need to check each other's work, explain their reasoning and communicate using math terms to determine the correct solutions.

Students work in pairs or 'twins.' Each pair is randomly assigned by the teacher and each partner has their own worksheet. On each worksheet, students solve their own unique system of equations, but they should get the same answer as their partner, who has a different system. Students will need to communicate with each other and check their work and each other's to determine who or what the correct solution to the system is.
